    The fact sheet is about human rights and the three diseases – HIV, Tuberculosis and Malaria. It highlights the importance of promoting human rights in response to the three diseases. The fact sheet was developed by UNDP and the Open Society Foundations in collaboration with the Roll Back Malaria and Stop TB Partnerships, and the Ford Foundation in order to support discussions at the Global Fund on HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria Partnership Forum, held in Brazil in 2011.

    Since the departure of former President Ben Ali in January 2011, Tunisia has been witnessing a dramatic transition to democracy involving a complete overhaul of its political system. UNDP has refocused its work in Tunisia to support key institutions, processes and stakeholders that can have a significant impact in assuring the steady transition to democracy – including support to the constitutional process, political parties, and women’s political participation.

    The peoples’ movement that spread across North Africa and other parts of the Arab world in 2011 expressed a growing demand for government accountability, especially by the younger generation. It resulted in political transitions or reforms in half a dozen countries, affecting the lives of over 100 million people. In spite of significant gains, many countries still face pressing problems—civil unrest, rising unemployment, weak institutional capacities and challenges in ensuring fair elections and constitutional processes. All these underline the important need for cooperative and transparent state-citizen relations to achieve a viable and peaceful transition.
