In January 2016, we teamed up with the Chengdu Panda Base in China to announce two panda cubs as UNDP’s first-ever global Animal Ambassadors for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – also known as the Global Goals. As part of the global campaign, UNDP and the Chengdu Panda Base are working with zoos around the world on a global contest that aims to engage the public with our pandas.
The contest has two parts:
Part I is asking the public’s help in naming the two Animal Ambassadors by simply entering suggestions in the online form on the pandas.undp.org website.
Part II is inviting participants to submit a short selfie video explaining which of the new goals are important to them and why. The 17 winners, become our Panda Champions that get the chance to visit the Chengdu Panda Base to learn more about the SDGs and meet the Pandas.
Pandas are an endangered species adored around the world. They are also a powerful symbol of the plight of the world’s vanishing wildlife due to the destruction, degradation and loss of natural habitats. The contest offers a fun and innovative way to spread the messages of the Global Goals and invite people to take part in UNDP’s work on climate action, sustainable development, protection of biodiversity and stopping of illegal wildlife trade.
