The Arab region is experiencing a defining moment in its modern history. Millions of women and men across the region have issued a resounding call for change. Youth have voiced in new ways their aspirations for a say in the decisions that affect their lives, and for transparent and accountable governance. People from all walks of life in several countries have united to demand that governments honor the dignity that they carry inside and recognize in one another. For the first time in the region, several countries have taken bold and decisive steps on the long road to democratic governance – but all are still undergoing intense re-negotiations of their future trajectories.More

Anti-corruption and integrity in the Arab countries

As the region has started to experience unprecedented waves of political unrest and historic transformations, anti-corruption has emerged as a top reform priority for a large number of new stakeholders. The overall aim of the ACIAC Project is to help Arab stakeholders to reduce corruption risks and to adopt enhanced standards and practices in this field. The project has four main components: anti-corruption and integrity assessments; implementation of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC); integrity in basic-services sectors; and anti-corruption in crisis-affected countries. more

Constitution Drafting and Reform

A number of countries in the region have chosen to reform or even completely re-write their constitutions as the starting point to their democratic transitions. UNDP will provide support to these constitutional drafting or reform processes by ensuring that constitutional drafting and reforms in transition countries benefit from international good practices and are developed through inclusive and participatory processes. more

26 - 29 November: Regional Governance Week

The “​Arab Governance Week” will take stock of the progress made towards democratic transitions from the perspective of social accountability, focusing on the process of re-negotiating the social contract between the citizens and State in the Arab Region. The week will focus specifically on the role of governance evidence and human rights monitoring, particularly the UPR, as mechanisms for enhancing accountability relations. more


Experiences from the South can guide democracy in the Arab Region

UNDP is holding number of events across the Arab region on special topics in relation to the transition and reform as part of its long-standing commitment to supporting countries around the world as they pursue human development in its fullest sense. Convening these international events also represents UNDP’s commitment to South-South cooperation, or ensuring that stakeholders in the countries in which we work have maximum access to the vast stock of lessons, experiences and ideas that is available across the developing world. more

UNDP supported the High Judicial Elections Committee in Egypt in the production of "Masr Be2eidak" TV sport to raise awareness and educate the voters about their rights and duties and to provided them with the necessary information about the voting process.
