The Arab region is going through a tremendous moment of democratic change that is taking very different forms and shapes. Several countries have already taken very concrete steps to address this transformation: first free and fair elections with increased women participation, initial steps towards constitutional or legal reforms, all with very different results and experiences. Our Goals

UNDP works in the Arab States with governments, the private sector and civil society to support these processes of change, strengthening the capacity of institutions and individuals to protect human rights, enhance social cohesion and expand public space for dialogue between governments and citizens. More

Facts about UNDP work in Democratic Governance

UNDP backed the My Voice for Her campaign in Libya, which encouraged 1.3 million women to register to vote in 2012 elections. UNDP supports 1 in 3 parliaments in the developing world and an election every 2 weeks.

Programme on Governance in the Arab Region

The Programme on Governance in the Arab Region -POGAR- supported key regional and national governance institutions to address governance needs and concerns, with the aim of enhancing good governance practice and governance reform in the Arab world. POGAR’s activities ranged from promoting policy dialogue and creating strategic partnerships, to capacity building and knowledge sharing among government officials, civil society organizations, academics and donor agencies. more

Anti-Corruption and Integrity in the Arab Countries (ACIAC)

Qatar and UNDP signed an agreement specifying the financial contributions Qatar will make to UNDP’s "Anti-Corruption and Integrity in the Arab Countries" (ACIAC) project – an initiative that brings together multiple stakeholders in the region, including governments, civil society organizations, businesses and international development partners, to take collective action against corruption. more

UNDP, through its rule of Law Programme, is supporting the Palestinian police in upholding the law in an effective and accountable manner, while also mainstreaming gender and increasing citizen's confidence.
