UNDP & Japan Strategic Partnership

UNDP and Japan have a strong strategic partnership across the Arab States region, which is active in every middle or low-income Arab State and which has deepened as the region has gone through major changes in recent years. It is a partnership founded on shared priorities of human security, peace-building and sustainable development, and anchored in a common perspective that the Arab States region needs the most intensive and strategic support the international community can provide.

Cooperation between Japan and UNDP across the Arab States region responds to the most urgent needs of the countries of this diverse region within the scope of Japan’s foreign policy and UNDP’s highly complementary Strategic Plan. Our shared priorities also support the vision of Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals, including the imperative of promoting equity and leaving no one behind. UNDP interventions supported by Japan in each Arab State are tailored to local needs, and address development challenges in an integrated fashion addressing root causes; several major areas have stood out in recent years:

  • Resilience and the humanitarian-development nexus

    Resilience and the humanitarian-development nexus: Since 2012 UNDP has increasingly championed the resilience-based approach in crisis, post crisis and fragile contexts.more 

  • Stabilization

    UNDP is the lead partner supporting the Government of Iraq in its efforts to stabilize areas liberated from ISIL by restoring delivery of basic services, jumpstarting the local economy, strengthening the leadership role of help stabilize seven cities, and stands ready to do the same in approximately 15 additional cities or more that are expected to be liberated. more 

  • Democratic Transition

    The uprisings that took place in many countries across the Arab States region in 2011 underscored widespread demands among populations for more inclusive, responsive and effective systems of governance.more 

  • Inclusive growth, job creation and local development

    Low labor force participation rates and high levels of unemployment, particularly among youth and women, have for long been among the most pressing development challenges across the Arab States, and have only exacerbated in recent years as overall regional instability has constrained investment and economic growth. more 

  • Prevention of Violent Extremism

    Much of UNDP’s work across the Arab States region, including that supported by Japan, is hoped to reduce violent extremism at least indirectly through supporting more inclusive and sustainable development and citizen engagement—for example by creating jobs and strengthening the voice of young people in national processes.more 

  • Climate Change and Human Security

    Climate change is one of the most complex and urgent development issues facing the Arab States, not least due to its profile as the most water-scarce region in the world. more
