    Combatting Malaria in Sudan Distribution of Over Five Million Insecticide Treated Bed Nets

    Khartoum - The National Malaria Control Programme, Federal Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and UNICEF launched the second phase of the bed net distribution plan in 2014. During this campaign that will be conducted during the period of September 13-27, 2014 about 1.16 million bed nets will be distributed bringing the total number of distributed bed nets to more than five million in various states of Sudan.

    UNAIDS, UNDP back plan for poorest countries to keep low-cost access to life-saving drugs

    New York — The Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and UN Development Programme (UNDP) called today for renewing a provision that allows the world’s poorest countries access to life-saving drugs at costs they can afford, ahead of talks on the issue in Geneva next week.

    Strengthening health systems in Sudan

    At the Central Medical Supplies warehouse in North Khartoum: 2.7 million USD worth of medical equipment was officially handed over from UNDP to the federal and State Ministries of Health. The equipment donated by the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, included Lab and IT equipment as well as 22 vehicles to upgrade andsupport 19 Medical Laboratories, 5 Rural Hospitals and 25 Health Care Centers across the country. The vehicles and IT equipments are intended to strengthen the health management teams at the locality levels.

    In the context of the initiative on the socio-economic empowerment of People Living with HIV (PLWH), the HIV Practice of the UNDP Regional Centre in Cairo (RCC) established a partnership with the famous radio station Saut Al Arab (which reaches out to 40% of the rural populations in the Arab world).

    UNDP and WHO hand over first specialized TB Hospital to the Government of Iraq

    The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) handed over the first specialised Tuberculosis (TB) hospital to the Government of Iraq at a ceremony. The Hospital is located in the Sulimaniya Governorate, and will be supported by the Federal Government and the Kurdistan Regional Government. The KRG Minister of Health, Dr. Tahir Hawrami, and officials from the national TB programme in Baghdad, were also present at the ceremony.

    The UN system launches internal campaign to fight HIV-related stigma and discrimination in the workplace in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

    Riyadh, the United Nations system is launching on the 8th of June 2011, a global campaign called “Stigma Fuels HIV” aimed to create awareness and to fight against HIV related stigma and discrimination. The UN system strives to become a model workplace in regard to HIV and for this reason it provides continuing training to its employees about HIV prevention, treatment and care options; and it has adopted advanced policies that ensure a fair and respectful environment.

    UNDP handover of GFATM HIV program construction sites to FMOH at new central warehouse in Khartoum

    Khartoum – The Undersecretary of the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. Isamaldine Mohammed Abdalla received a commemorative key from UNDP Acting Deputy Country Director, Yakub Beris, to mark the successful delivery of more than 60 health facilities constructed through the Global Fund grant for combating HIV/AIDS in Sudan, at the handover ceremony held this morning in the new central warehouse for storage of drugs, in Khartoum North.

    World TB Day marked by conferences in Gaza City and Ramallah

    Jerusalem -Today is World TB Day, a day which commemorates the discovery of the bacteria that causes tuberculosis and serves as a reminder that 1.6 million people die every year from the disease. TB remains to be the number one opportunistic infection affecting people living with HIV and AIDS.
