I appreciate the flexibility of my colleagues and friends in the Regional United Nations Development Group (UNDG) in finding a new time for this meeting and for agreeing to meet on a Saturday. I acknowledge our guests at this meeting, in particular Margot Ellis, Nigel Fisher and Ferid Belhaj. We also have with us today the UN Resident Coordinators for Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq.

A press conference was convened today 31 October 2013 at Al-Bustan Hotel to honor the winners of the Youth Innovation and Creativity Award. Twenty eight youth from around Yemen were impatient for 31st of October the day, in which sixteen innovative and creative business ideas won the Youth Innovation and Creativity Award. The award rewards the youth innovative business ideas with $20,000 for each project. The winning projects will receive additional technical implementation support to ensure that there are successfully implemented.

The inaugural State of Energy Report for Dubai stands as an example of this effort, one of the world’s first sub-national reports to capture trends and opportunities in the drive for a sustainable energy future. Developed in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme and the Dubai Carbon Centre for Excellence, the State of the Energy Report highlights the drive by Dubai to emerge as a centre of innovation, investment and technology in the Arab region.

Rabat - The Arab Youth Volunteering for a Better Future project, under the umbrella of the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme, launches the first regional “Volunteer Management Training of Trainers”. Starting today in Rabat, Morocco, the workshop aims to strengthen the capacities of civil society organizations in the Arab region.

New York – The Syria crisis will cost Lebanon $7.5 billion in economic losses by the end of next year, according to a joint report prepared by the World Bank, the United Nations and the Government of Lebanon discussed at today’s inaugural meeting of the International Support Group for Lebanon. New York – With less than 1000 days left until the target date for achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), today the United Nations Development Group along with the League of Arab States and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) launched a report showing that recent turmoil in the Arab region imperils progress towards the goals across the Arab world.

Vienna - Seeking to improve their management of water resources, Three Arab countries and Chad today agreed at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to establish a long-term framework for utilizing a key underground water system. Egypt, Libya, Sudan and Chad signed a Strategic Action Programme (SAP) that aims to optimize the equitable use of the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System, a huge water resource that lies beneath the four nations.
