Berlin, Germany– The United States has pledged $10 million to the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) project supporting Syrian refugees who have fled to host communities in neighbouring countries. Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration Anne C. Richard announced the pledge at the “Conference on Syrian Refugee Situation – supporting stability in the region” hosted today in Berlin, Germany.

Jerusalem – UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People and the Palestinian Government, represented by the Prime Minister’s office, signed a USD 10 million agreement with the Islamic Development Bank to reconstruct partially damaged housing units in Gaza.

Statement of the Associate Administrator Berlin Conference on the Syrian Refugee Situation – Supporting Stability in the Region
I wish to congratulate Germany on the foresight and commitment shown in convening this timely and important conference. The Syria crisis has brought violence, destruction, deaths and injuries and continues to do so. It has led to massive internal and external displacement and worsened existing vulnerabilities in an already-pressured sub-region. It has challenged the way the international community collectively responds to crises.

The EU-UNDP electoral assistance project in Jordan supported a four-day study visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina for officials of the Independent Election Commission (IEC). The visit coincided with national elections held on 12 October 2014.

Yemeni Government and partners validate roadmap to improve rural livelihoods and employment for women, youth and marginalized groups
Sana’a, the Government of Yemen requested support from the United Nations to accelerate progress on reducing poverty. Under a joint leadership by the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation and the Ministry of Local Administration, partners and stakeholders have since August this year worked to identify bottlenecks hindering development. Through participatory consultations, a tool developed by UNDP and adopted by the United Nations Development Group known as the MDG Acceleration Framework (MAF) has been applied. Identified priorities and the way forward agreed upon was today presented to partners and stakeholders in Sana’a.

EU and UNDP Celebrate the Launch of the Second Phase of the Project to Help Develop the North West Coast and Mine Action
The European Union (EU) Delegation to Egypt, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Egypt Country Office and the Egyptian Ministry of International Cooperation celebrate today the launch of the EU and UNDP Partnership Agreement to support the North-West Coast Development Plan and Relevant Mine Action Phase II. The EU has fully funded this project with 4.7 million Euros which will help clear mines, reintegrate mine victims into the economy and create awareness in the community.

The Waldensian Church in Italy signed a Cost-Sharing Agreement (CSA) with UNDP on Tuesday September 30 2014, donating $ 650,000 to the aid of the Lebanese host communities. This very generous contribution through the Lebanon Host Community Support project (LHSP), the joint project between UNDP and the Ministry of Social affairs in Lebanon (MOSA), will be a great support and will improve host communities life conditions, as well as help fund interventions on social inclusion between host communities and Syrian Refugees.

“Sharek.org” named best CSR initiative in the Middle East and Africa - Egyptian Private Sector Shines with Gold in Paris
Egypt’s private sector was celebrated in Paris last week, when P&G, PwC and IBM’s Egyptian affiliates collectively won the Gold Prize for the Best Corporate Social Responsibility Program in the Middle East and Africa, at the prestigious Stevie International Business Awards. The 3 Egyptian CSR pioneers won the golden prize after their initiative “Sharek.org”, the first-of-its-kind website in Egypt and the Arab World aimed at encouraging corporate volunteerism.

Tunis - UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon applauded the progress that Tunisia, the cradle of the Arab Spring has made in its transition and highlighted the importance of the Constitution that country has adopted in January of 2014, calling it one of the most progressive constitutions in the Arab world. He also underscored the necessity of carrying out the upcoming elections in a peaceful environment and in a transparent and credible manner where the results of the elections would be accepted by all citizens.

Khartoum - The National Malaria Control Programme, Federal Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and UNICEF launched the second phase of the bed net distribution plan in 2014. During this campaign that will be conducted during the period of September 13-27, 2014 about 1.16 million bed nets will be distributed bringing the total number of distributed bed nets to more than five million in various states of Sudan.
