Nairobi, Kenya – The combination of a massive scale-up in humanitarian assistance and an exceptional harvest have helped relieve famine conditions in Somalia, but interrupting assistance risks these gains, according to analysis released today by the Food and Agricultural Organisation’s Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit (FSNAU) and the Famine Early Warning System (FEWS NET).

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) handed over the first specialised Tuberculosis (TB) hospital to the Government of Iraq at a ceremony. The Hospital is located in the Sulimaniya Governorate, and will be supported by the Federal Government and the Kurdistan Regional Government. The KRG Minister of Health, Dr. Tahir Hawrami, and officials from the national TB programme in Baghdad, were also present at the ceremony.

Sana’a – The UN staff member, who has been held in Yemen since 15 January 2012, arrived today in a UN safe haven in Sana’a after he was released earlier in Ma’rib. He is in good health and is receiving standard medical examinations and psychological counselling. He has been in touch with his family and will be reunited with them in Norway soon.

Sudan 2013-2016 Khartoum Distinguished Guests, Members of the Press, Ladies and Gentlemen, Today we are officially launching the process, together with the Government of Sudan, to reach a United Nations Development Assistance Framework—fondly referred to as the UNDAF—for the period of 2013-2016. It is a participatory and consultative process, with several key steps and events that will culminate in the signing of a new UNDAF in May 2012. During a ceremony in Beirut on 8 December 2011 UNDP Iraq handed over the Legal Database to the Government of Iraq represented by Higher Judicial Council. The project designed to collect and maintain the corpus of the Iraqi official legal documents provides easy access to the Iraqi legislations and their enforcement.

The project, which will last for two years a half, will adopt a two-phase approach: phase one will focus on the early presidential elections scheduled for 21 February, 2012; and phase two will focus on electoral reforms, the expected referendum on the new/revised constitution, and the post-referendum elections. The capacity of the SCER will be built during both phases at the institutional and individual levels. Support will be provided from a multi-partners basket fund to ensure both coordination and cost-effectiveness.
