  • Ensuring equal opportunity for women “to judge among people with justice.”Jun 7, 2015Cairo – A distinguished group of women judges from eleven Arab states participating in an international conference entitled “Women Judges in the Arab World: Challenges, Hindrances, and Achievements,” discussed, over two days strategies to enhance the representation of women in the judiciary. They agreed that efficiency, not gender, should be the primary and sole criterion for enrolment in the judiciary, and that more qualified women would gain access to the judiciary if selection of judges was done through competition, based only upon professionalism without any form of discrimination.

  • Dignity at the heart of Dawoodiya camp – UN handover to Dohuk authoritiesMay 21, 2015UN humanitarian partners among which the UN Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-Habitat), and International Organization for Migration (IOM) today handed over to local authorities in Dohuk, Kurdistan Region of Iraq, the communal infrastructure of Dawoodiya camp for internally displaced persons that they jointly built. Established in January, the camp now hosts 680 families, approximately 4,000 people originally from Ninewa province, Tal-Afar and the Sinjar.

  • Improved sanitation key to the health of displaced and host communities in Dohuk May 21, 2015The UN Development Programme (UNDP) today donated three dislodging tankers to local authorities in Dohuk, Kurdistan Region of Iraq, to improve WASH services in a governorate, which contends with one of the largest numbers of internally displaced persons in the world. The dislodging tankers will provide sanitation services to at least three camps, or some 20,000 displaced persons in the northern governorate. These services will also benefit to schools within host communities.

  • The Executive Secretariat for the Demining and Development of the North West Coast demonstrates accomplishments and future plansMay 20, 2015Cairo - The Executive Secretariat for the Demining and Development of the North West Coast of the Ministry of International Cooperation is celebrating today its accomplishments and the implementation of Phase II of the ‘Support to the North West Coast Development and Mine Action Plan’. The most remarkable among these achievements to date is the mine-clearance of 94,446 acres in Al Alamein area, the completion of three watershed management projects at the Hawaweer, Hebla and Ahdaf valleys at Matrouh. The programme is supported and funded by the Egyptian Government, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United States Agency for International Development (EGP 13.8 million) and the European Union (EUR 4.7 million).

  • State Secretary of Sweden Visits UNDP Projects and Signs Agreement in Support of Area C and East Jerusalem May 18, 2015East Jerusalem – In the presence of State Secretary of Sweden, Ulrika Modéer, the Consul General of Sweden, Ann-Sofie Nilsson, and UNDP Special Representative of the Administrator, Frode Mauring, signed a USD 3.6 million agreement (SEK 30 million) to support the resilience of Palestinians residing in Area C and East Jerusalem.

  • First ever crisis coordination and disaster preparedness centre in KurdistanMay 17, 2015The Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Ministry of Interior today inaugurated its Joint Crisis Coordination Centre (JCC), mandated by the Council of Ministers in January 2015. Several international donor partners and the United Nations extended support to the KRG to build an institutional response and coordination capacity not only to the on-going humanitarian and development crisis in Iraq, but also to future man-made and natural disasters in an “all hazards” approach.
