UNDP and OFID launch Arab Development Portal

Amman, Jordan - The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) today launched the Arab Development Portal (ADP), an open, one-stop, online knowledge platform providing timely data and information on development in the Arab region.

It is my pleasure to welcome you all to the launch of the Arab Development Portal. The Arab Development Portal will go live as I speak, becoming accessible not only to the 141 million internet users in the Arab States Region but also to the 3.2 billion people worldwide who are similarly plugged-in. A bi-lingual one-stop-shop, the Portal offers a dynamic, multi-source database housing 2,750 unique indicators, the majority gathered from the websites of National Statistical Offices of Arab States.

UNDP and Japan agree to expand support for restoring access to electricity in Syria

New York - The United Nations Development Programme’s Regional Bureau for Arab States and the Government of Japan signed today a US$11.5 million agreement to expand efforts to restore reliable electricity to Syrian communities affected by the crisis in Syria. The one-year agreement will be implemented by UNDP Syria and builds on ongoing support by the Government of Japan for UNDP’s efforts to reach the most vulnerable people across the war-torn country which has been in crisis since 2011.

Gaza – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of Japan marked the closing of the emergency support to solid waste services project in the Gaza Strip, funded by the Government of Japan for a total of USD 4.3 million. The project, which is implemented in partnership with the Presidency’s Job Creation Programme (JCP), contributed to creating over 181,777 working days for more than 7,000 workers.

The project aims to support community-based dialogue to resolve conflicts and enhance community resilience to violence in the targeted districts.
