Youth leaders from Lebanese universities nationwide launch Peace Building Clubs, promote volunteerism and youth activism
Youth leaders from 14 public and private universities nationwide will announce the establishment of Peace Building Clubs and on-campus activities around Volunteerism and Youth Activism at a forum organized by the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) Peace Building Project and hosted by the Lebanese American University (Beirut campus) on 25 February, 2011.

The Sudan Judiciary and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have launched today a comprehensive training workshop targeting subordinate court judges at the Judiciary House in Khartoum. Fifty judges from different states are to participate in this four-week workshop which is aimed at raising the capacity of the judges to effectively and fairly apply the law and deliver justice.

European Commission and UNDP to a develop a regional Crisis Response Centre at the League of Arab States
he European Commission has signed an agreement with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to set up a regional Crisis Response Centre and Warning System at the League of Arab States. The Centre aims strengthening the capacities of the Arab region in crisis prevention and response through enhanced cooperation between the Secretariat General of the League of Arab States (SGLAS), the European Commission (EC) and the UNDP.

The Arab region has achieved progress in many MDGs, including significant strides in health and education, says a recently launched UN Report. However, there have been setbacks and constraints attributable to several factors, including the relatively poor economic performance in the 1990s and early 2000s, inadequate financing of social policies, and increasing political tensions and conflicts.

On the occasion of Human Rights Day, H.E. Dr. Nezar Al Baharna, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, launched the Government of Bahrain Report entitled “Foreign Workers and Labour Conditions in Bahrain”. The report details some of the issues related to foreign workers in the Kingdom, such as recruitment fees, wages, excessive work, passport and mobility as well as other forms of physical and psychological abuse. It further features solutions and protections currently available in the Kingdom, as well as future pledges for further improving working and living conditions of foreign workers in Bahrain. The Report was prepared in joint consultation with the Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Justice and the Public Prosecutor’s Office, LMRA and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the support of UNDP within the framework of the UPR Project.

A National Symposium on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was held in joint cooperation between the Ministry of Social Development, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the National Committee for Disabled Persons Affairs. The symposium was convened to coincide with the Kingdom's celebrations of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3rd.

Iraq - Every year hundreds of Iraqis are killed or maimed by cluster munitions and landmines, due to Iraq’s contamination of millions of explosive remnants of war (ERW). According to Iraqi figures, the contamination claimed 14,000 victims between 1991 and 2007, while in the three Kurdish governorates the estimated number of victims (both injuries and deaths) was 8,174 between 1991 and 2008.
