Somalia is at a crossroads where decades of one of the world’s most complex and protracted conflicts have shaped a country of stark contrasts. Youth have consistently borne the brunt of the protracted conflict and, today, 73 per cent of Somalia’s population is below the age of 30, and 42 per cent is between 14 and 29 years.

The Supreme Commission for Elections and Referendum, SCER, with technical support from the international community, , is leading a massive and ambitious project to transform the hand-written, and labour-intensive registry process into a biometric voter register that will ensure security and electoral integrity for years to come.

UNDP has launched a National Anti-Corruption campaign to educate over 3,000 people on the dangers of corruption. The campaign will last until November 2013 and will consist of 96 workshops educating government officials and non-governmental organisations on the types of corruption, the role of responsible citizens and how to report a suspected violation.

Memorandum of understanding signed between Princess Sumaya University for Technology and Higher Council for Youth
In 2012, UNDP and the Higher Council for Youth joined forces to implement the Youth Participation in Local Governance project. The aim is to use innovative methods and new media to foster Jordanian youth political participation by increasing their awareness about local governance and political participation at the local level . The project identified ‘gamification’ as a tool to spread more awareness about civic engagement.

Mogadishu, Somalia - In Sunday’s dual attacks on the Banadir Regional Court and in Wadajir District in Mogadishu, where dozens of people died, Somalia tragically lost a number of its legal professionals, including a judge, prosecutors, lawyers and legal support staff, who until their last minutes were working tirelessly to protect the fundamental human rights of the Somalis they represented.
