A delegation from UNDP, led by the Country Director, Mr. Peter Batchelor met with the Speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives, Mr. Osama Al Nujaifi in the Iraqi Parliament.

UNDP recently commenced a Parliamentary Support Programme to bring international expertise and technical support to the Council of Representatives.  Mr. Batchelor stressed the importance of the role of the Iraqi Parliament in nation building and the need for it to be the ultimate venue where political issues are settled through democratic discourse.  Mr. Al Nujaifi welcomed the initiative, highlighting the importance of the role of the UN in supporting Iraq to become a stable and developed country. He emphasized the need for the Iraqi Parliament to become a more effective institution of oversight and a conflict resolution body. He stated that local parties should bring political differences and issues to Parliament for resolution in a democratic and transparent manner. The Parliament will therefore become pivotal to support the political development of Iraq.

UNDP´s Parliamentary Support Project focuses on oversight, representation and improved capacity for legislation.  UNDP Iraq is currently lending support to the Committee on Human Rights in establishing the Human Rights Commission in cooperation with the UNAMI Human Rights Office in addition to engaging in a number of initiatives to encourage women´s empowerment and equity.
