Signature of the Memorandum of Understanding between UNDP and BankMed
With the common aim of raising awareness on the environmental challenges, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and BankMed signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on April 30th at UNDP’s premises.
The ceremony was attended by UNDP Resident Representative Mr. Robert Watkins, UNDP Country Director Mr. Seifeldin Abbaro, head of projects at BankMed Mr. Nadim Barrage, representing the Executive General Manager Mr. Mohamed Ali Beyhum and head of environmental committee at BankMed Ms. Diala Chuccair.
Under the framework of Sustainable Rural Development, this MoU includes a series of environmental activities in-line with achieving goal 7 “Environment Sustainability” of the Millennium Development Goals.
Some of these activities explained Mr. Edgard Chehab, UNDP Assistant Resident Representative, include developing joint awareness campaigns and promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy applications. Mr. Chehab stated that the most important project listed in the MoU is implementing an Eco-village prototype, where eco houses aim at saving energy and water consumption.
Mr. Barrage gave an overview on BankMed environmental projects since 2009 and hoped that this agreement marks an opportunity for BankMed to lead forward the “green way” into the future.
From his side, Mr. Watkins stressed on the importance of the linkage between UNDP and the private sector. “ This partnership with the private sector, in particular with BankMed, will send a very strong message to Lebanon that it is not just the international community but also the Lebanese community that is asking for a better environment” he added.
During the event, both UNDP’s Energy and Environment programme and BankMed’s environmental media campaigns were displayed.
