Anti-bullying project takes off with the help of KNPC
In an aim to reduce the amount of bullying in schools and to decrease the evident violence that stems from it, Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) signed a new agreement with the United Nations Development Programme in Kuwait. The project is titled “Fostering Youth Resiliency in Kuwait and it aims to combat violence amongst Kuwaiti youth in schools. KNPC Chairman & Managing Director, Mr. Fahed S. Al-Ajmi, and UNDP Resident Representative (a.i.) in Kuwait, Mr. Stein R. Hansen signed the Human & Social Development project to initiate the campaign.
“KNPC is proud to bear the costs of this first of its kind project in Kuwait and GCC to stand against bullying among our youth,” Al-Ajmi explained during the occasion. “It mirrors KNPC’s leadership in promoting anti-bullying and violent behavior at schools,” he added.
For his part, Hansen expressed his pleasure to be involved in this pioneering initiative, which is the first of its kind in Kuwait. At the end of the implementation of such projects, UNDP will review the experience, the repercussions and the possibility for implantation in other parts of the region. “This pilot project is not an end, but a start which may take years to reap its fruit,” Hansen stated.
According to KNPC Deputy Chairman, Bakhit Al-Rashidi, the programme includes awareness campaigns to help prevent all forms of bullying, whether it is of the physical kind, verbal abuse, social pressure or that which takes place online.
“We are calling for 20-30 leading youth volunteers from the public to be selected and professionally trained to then be sent to the schools to help spread our message,” Al-Rashidi said.
The two-year project strives to mainly protect students and help them have a kinder and more pleasant educational experience. It also seeks to limit the impact of such behavior on the youth’s full involvement in the national development of the country aiding their participation in future ventures.
Kuwait Red Crescent Society will organize a series of training and communication workshops in high schools, sport centers and local communities in support of this project.
