Renewed hope for future elections in Iraq
On 7 October, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Mr. Martin Kobler, hosted a reception at the UN House in Baghdad for the newly appointed Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) Board of Commissioners.
In his welcoming speech, Mr. Kobler underlined the importance of fair, free and transparent elections to secure Iraq’s democratic future. He expressed his confidence in the new Board of Commissioners to work alongside IHEC staff and the UN International Electoral Assistance Team to improve Iraqi electoral practice in line with international standards. There is now renewed hope the Governorate Council Elections will be successfully carried out in April 2013.
Mr. Kobler’s address was followed by a debate on how cooperation between the Iraqi electoral authorities and the relevant UN counterparts could be strengthened. Among the participants were the Deputy SRSG, Mr. György Busztin, UNDP Country Director Mr. Peter Batchelor, UNDP Governance Cluster Manager, Ms. Rini Reza and UNAMI Chief Electoral Advisor, Mr. Jose Maria Aranaz.
