Empowering the Iraqi civil society

Nov 12, 2012

UNDP held a Grant Guidelines Workshop for 25 pre-qualified Iraqi Civil Society Organizations at the Iraqi Council of Representatives.

The event comes under a jointly funded initiative by Denmark and Sweden to empower registered Civil Society Organisations in Iraq and is implemented through a UNDP-UNOPS partnership.

The initiative will run until June 2014 and is intended to build the capacities of Iraqi CSOs whilst they work on projects in the areas of human and civil rights, anti-corruption and promotion of quality service delivery.

The qualified civil society organizations participating in the event were selected based on administrative eligibility and status, and upon their understanding of the role of civil society in Iraq.

“This workshop allowed us to provide feedback on the grant evaluation criteria to bring it closer to the Iraqi Civil Society capacities and for the Civil Society to provide feedback on the quality of the technical assistance that will be granted” said one CSO representative.

Instead of announcing a standard call for proposals, UNDP will provide technical assistance to support the Civil Society Organisations in developing project proposals; provide guidance on the principles of sound project cycle management and advice on monitoring and evaluation.

The project will provide these organisations with knowledge management skills as a result of the grants process and the implementation of the projects.

UNDP is expecting to sign the grants with the selected organisations in early 2013.
