Training of future judges and prosecutors in Erbil

Dec 30, 2012

As part of its support to the Judicial Training Institute in Erbil, UNDP hosted Spanish Judge Ms. Ana Maria Rubio Encina who is specialised in domestic  and gender-based violence, to provide sessions at a training course for 41 potential Judges and Public Prosecutors.

During her visit to Erbil, UNDP organised additional sessions on Domestic and Gender-based Violence and international law for the Kurdistan Bar Association and law students of the faculty of Law at the University of Salah Eldein.

The sessions discussed the challenges to the application of the newly adopted Domestic Violence Bill in the Kurdistan Region, examining the Spanish experience and in general the international human rights law. 150 law students and professors attended the session at the University.

Ms. Encina held meetings and sessions with the Kurdistan Bar Association, the Directorate to Combat Violence against Women, the Director of the Judicial Training Institute, the Erbil legal aid help desk and the Dean of the Faculty of Law at Salah Eldein University to discuss mainstreaming these into the University’s different curricula.

As follow up, UNDP will continue to provide support and technical advice to the Judicial Training Institute to mainstream Human Rights especially combating gender and domestic based violence
