Manama launches the Human Development Report 2013 in Manama

imageLaunching the Human Development Report 13 in the Kingdom of Bahrain

The United Nations Development Programme and the Government of Bahrain launched today the UNDP Human Development Report 2013 entitled “Rise of the South: Human Progress in a Diverse” in Manama.

Mr. Peter Grohmann, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, accompanied by Government of Bahrain’s representative Ambassador Karim Al Shakar, Undersecretary for International Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, addressed the attendees on behalf of UNDP and Government of Bahrain. Guest speaker of the event was HE Shaikh Mohammed bin Essa Al Khalifa, Chairman of Tamkeen & Political and Economic Advisor to HRH Crown Prince.

In his presentation, Mr. Grohmann outlined the most important messages of the report and its relevance to the Kingdom of Bahrain. From his side, Mr. Al Shakar praised the efforts of UNDP in publishing such an important report, which helps States, the public and private sectors, and civil society propel the Human Development agenda to the frontline.

Guest speaker H.E Shaikh Mohamed bin Isa Al Khalifa commented on the report as an important publication that informs policy makers. In relation to Bahrain, he pointed out that “[Bahrain] regardless of its limited resources and size has made an effort to capitalize on its people, and learn from other good experiences in the World”. He quoted the HRH the Crown Prince in saying that “Bahrain should aim high in the World and not just limit itself to being ahead of the Arab countries”.

At the launch, a panel discussed the report and its relevance to Bahrain. The Panel was comprised of Dr. Baqer Al Najjar, Professor of development studies at the University of Bahrain and an expert on human development in the Arab world; Dr. Lulwa Al Mutlaq; ex- Vice Chair of Economic Empowerment of Women Committee at the Supreme Council of Women & member of Business Women Committee BCCI; and Dr. Khalid Abdulla, Chairman of Bahrain Competitiveness Council, ex-academic and currently in the banking sector. Issues relating to economics, gender, employment, and youth were among the most important topics discussed by the panelists and the audience.
