Swiss Federal Councillor recognizes UNDP support to the local communities hosting Syrian refugees
H.E. Swiss Federal Councillor Ms. Simonetta Sommaruga, Head of the Federal Department of Justice and Police was accompanied by the United Nations Resident Coordinator Mr. Edward Kollen and a high level delegation from Swiss government, Jordanian government and UNDP to a field visit to witness on-site activities in Mafraq governorate.
Activities are part of the UNDP project; “Mitigating the Impact of the Syrian Refugee Crisis on the vulnerable Jordanian Host Communities" partly funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
On her visit to the Municipality of Za’atari and Al Sarhan, the Federal Councillor met with Mr. Abdul Karim El-Khaldi Mayor of Za’atari who briefed her on the pre-existing situation of the municipality and the challenges following the crisis, Ms. Sommaruga also visited Za’atari Park, where Jordanian and Syrian community worked on the beautification and improvement of the facilities, as part of the Project’s Community Outreach activity under the support of the World bank Emergency Services & Social Resilience Project (ESSRP).
The tour also included visit to a satellite vocational workshop in Sarhan Municipality where group of female youth beneficiaries from the local community have been trained on sewing and assembly lines and employed through the support of UNDP vocational programme funded by SDC and targeting around 500 vulnerable unemployed youth from Irbid and Mafraq.
The delegation concluded their visit at one of the recently established micro-businesses for a beneficiary who went through a Business Planning training aims at enhancing entrepreneurial skills of 300 unemployed youth in the hosting communities .Both livelihood activities provide youth with the required skills to become economically active, with the hope that the labour market presently challenged by the Syrian crisis will grow in the future and employ more people
