Location: American University in Beirut

The “Promoting Social Cohesion in the Arab Region” project is organizing, in cooperation with the Asfari Institute for Civil Society and Citizenship, the American University of Beirut, a training workshop entitled “Journalistic Reporting at Times of Conflicts and Social Polarization in the Arab Countries”.

The training workshop will equip journalists with the necessary skills they need to report on issues in a way that overcomes divisions, provides solutions and develops stronger bonds between all members of the community. Participants will look at key principles of good media coverage by learning how to evaluate news stories in a systematic and scientific approach that emphasizes ethical practice, accuracy, diversity, fairness and balance. Each participant will also pitch, cover and publish an informative story that meets international standards of journalism. Trainers will provide mentoring and guidance throughout the reporting and writing process.

At the end of the 3-day workshop, participants will be able to:

* Write a clear, balanced, and well-reported news/feature story which shows understanding of social cohesion and its role in advancing civic engagement;

* Monitor and evaluate media coverage in a standardized and structured manner that assesses reporting quality and impact on social cohesion; and

* Demonstrate an understanding of how media coverage impacts social cohesion and contributes to polarizing societies.
