Jobs Make the Difference: Country Consultations

Jobs make difference_event

Date: 28-29 January 2018
Location: Dead Sea, Jordan

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Regional Development and Protection Programme (RDPP) are organizing two day consultation in partnership with Microsoft, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the World Food Programme (WFP). The consultation builds upon the recommendations made in the Jobs Make the Difference: Expanding Economic Opportunities for Syrian Refugees and Host Communities, assessment published in 2017. The Human-Centred Design Thinking Approach is a proven innovation process developed by Stanford University.

The workshop will begin by reviewing the current situation involving the refugees and the host communities, as well as reviewing the recommendations provided by the Jobs Makes The Difference Report. This will then be followed by a variety of experts from various backgrounds and interests, presenting what is currently being done by their organizations in response to the crisis.

The discussions will then lead to participants, exploring the design challenge in depth, exploring key bottlenecks and barriers to job creation and access to economic opportunities to prioritize a select few challenges to focus on over the duration of the workshop. Small teams will then form in each of the priority challenge areas to refine their problem statement, outline the stakeholders involved, and paint a picture of the whole situation.

Teams will interview each other and field experts to further understand what is currently being done by the various organizations, to explore potential solutions, needs and insights around what would make a difference to dramatically change conditions for their challenge.

The workshop will conclude with participants from the Jordanian private sector, government, civil society and international organizations noting their interest on which prototypes they might be interested in, agreements on priority objectives as well as an action plan noting next steps utilizing current resources and building on existing initiatives where feasible.
