Inauguration of the newly dredged Abdeh harbor

Nov 29, 2010

In cooperation with Abdeh-Bebnin municipality and  the Abdeh Fishermen cooperative, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) – Early Recovery of Nahr El Bared Surrounding municipalities’ project – is organizing the inauguration of the Abdeh harbor after the completion of the dredging works on Monday 29th of November at 10:00am at the Abdeh harbor in Akkar.

The event will be attended by H.E. Minister of Environment Mr. Mohammed Rahhal, the Ambassador of Italy in Lebanon Mr. Giuseppe Morabito and the UNDP’s Resident Representative Ms. Marta Ruedas.

The harbor has not been subject to comprehensive dredging and improvement works since 1985. This made it increasingly difficult for the local fishermen to access the harbor in their boats, and the residue accumulated in the harbor basin has made fishing activities more difficult. In addition, the fishermen had to pave their boats in Tripoli port instead which led to the increase of their transportation fees. This is why the dredging was an important part of the recovery of the region.

The dredging works were conducted taking into account socio-economic and environmental perspectives. The project improved the livelihoods of the fishermen by deepening the basin of the harbor. All the fishermen can now again access the harbor easily.

The development of the fishing sector is one of UNDP’s key activities for the recovery of living conditions. Hence, a comprehensive study on the fishing sector in Abdeh has been elaborated in cooperation with Balamand University and the Italian association Sudgest Aid. The following recommendations resulted from this study: improving fishermen working conditions, supporting working women in this sector and improving the infrastructure of this sector.

Following the May 2007 clashes in Nahr El Bared camp, UNDP launched the Early recovery programme for Nahr El Bared Surrounding municipalities. The project aimed at improving the infrastructure and living conditions of the citizens living in that area, enhancing dialogue between youth and capacity building for municipalities and national NGOs.
