Feb 3, 2011

UNDP-ART GOLD North Lebanon in partnership with the “Minnieh Social Development Association” is organizing a graduation ceremony for 75 women from the Union of the Minnieh municipalities who have been trained on health awareness issues. The Graduation ceremony will take place at Al Mountazah Hall in Minnieh at 12:30 pm.

The ceremony is convened in the presence of Mr. Shombi Sharp UNDP Officer in charge, H.E. Mr. Johan Verkammen, Ambassador of Belgium in Lebanon, Mr. Mostafa Alk, President of the Union of the Minnieh municipalities and Mr. Abdel Hakim Kassem, President of the “Minnieh Social Development Association”.

The Minnieh area is not only among the most deprived areas in Lebanon but it is also characterized by an evident weakness in the population’s ability to access health services. In this context, this project funded by the Belgium Government aims to educate the inhabitants on the basics and main subjects of primary health care within their homes, families and kids. While 75 women from three villages, Minnieh, Deir Ammar and Bhannine have undertaken the training and benefited directly from this project, around 2,500 inhabitants of the villages will benefit indirectly.

All the activities are implemented by the “Minnieh Social Development Association” and the Union of Minnieh Municipalities. This training is part of a more comprehensive role sought in the coming years, which is to address the problem of lack of awareness in public health among young females, and the current project is a pilot project which aims at mainstreaming and becoming an indicator for future trainings.
