Under the patronage of H.E Lebanese Prime Minister Mr.Najib Mikati and on the eve of the 37th anniversary of  the outbreak of the civil war, the United Nations Development Programme - “Strengthening Civil Peace in Lebanon” Project and UMAM Documentation and Research in partnership with the Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon are organizing a launch event of “The Bus takes the podium: voyages in the memory of Lebanon and its people” initiative on Thursday, April 12, at 11:00 am in UMAM’s Hangar in Haret Hreik, near Al Imam Al Mehdi Mosque. H.E Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Adnan Mansour representing H.E Prime Minister Mr. Najib Mikati, UNDP Resident Representative Mr. Robert Watkins, Acting Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon Mr. Diego Escalona Paturel, UMAM D&R’s Director Mr. Lokman Slim, ministers, parliamentarians, ambassadors, UN agencies representatives and civil society activists will participate in this event. During the ceremony, attendants will visit the Ain el Rummanneh bus which triggered the civil war 37 years ago. The new joint initiative builds on this connotation of the old bus and focuses on turning the association into a positive one by introducing a new bus “The Bus takes the podium” which will be revealed during the ceremony. The mobile bus, which will tour different regions of Lebanon, is equipped with UMAM’s archives on the civil war, from dairies, events, monitoring of the victims, missing persons, perpetrators, instigators and actors, as well as media coverage, pictures, clippings, posters and slogans. During the “memory stops”, citizens of all ages - children, youth and adults - will engage in activities appropriate with the nature of the stops. This bus, which used to operate on Sidon-Beirut line, was bought by UMAM and revamped into a virtual library equipped with laptops directly linked to UMAM’s archive center, as well as with a scanner and tools for audio and video recording.
