Annual progress report: regional electoral support for middle East and North Africa

Sep 9, 2021

Nearly a decade since the 2011 uprisings the Middle East and North Africa region continues to be home to a diverse set of countries, systems and development challenges. Most recently, in its study of global democratic trends, International IDEA classified the MENA region as the ‘least democratic’ in the world and concluded that the democratic changes brought by the “Arab Spring” have worsened overtime. Overall, the region is seeing stagnation in half of the SDG 16 indicators and is the lowest scoring region in the world on all of the indicators. Despite all this, there are some positive developments to the democratic landscape in the region, such as an increase in gender equality vis a vis quotas leading to an increase in women’s political participation, as well as, in some countries, an increase in the number of active civil society organizations.
