31 March: Third Pledging Conference in Kuwait
On 31 March 2015, Kuwait will host the Third International Pledging Conference for Syria. His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Emir of Kuwait will open the conference chaired by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
Ms Valerie Amos, Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mr. António Guterres, High Commissioner for Refugees and for the first time, Ms. Helen Clark, Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme will be the main speaker at the conference. They will present the new generation of coordinated response plans to address the Syrian Crisis, which was launched last December in Berlin:— the Syria Strategic Response Plan 2015 (SRP) and the Regional Refugee and Resilience Plan 2015-2016 (3RP), under the joint leadership of the Office of Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Together, the plans bridge traditional humanitarian-refugee-development divides, representing the strategic shift that is required for a comprehensive and robust response, not only inside Syria but covering the entire area affected by the crisis—a global first.
UNDP has taken on a new role in the UN’s response to the Syria crisis, as not only implementer of a huge programmatic portfolio on resilience, but also as coordinator of the resilience component within the 3RP.
Now that for the first time we have included a strong role for development in a crisis response, UNDP strives to not only mobilize resources for its own programmes in response to the crisis, but as well, to mobilize the development community overall to fund the resilience component of the 3RP, which will be implemented by up to 200 partners.
Guide to Giving
