The Central Administration of Statistics and UNDP launch 26 district-level statistical reports

Towards people-centered policies

June 29, 2021

Beirut
: The Central Administration of Statistics (CAS), with the technical support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), launched today twenty-six statistical reports covering each of the administrative districts of Lebanon.  These reports provide district-level statistics covering a wide array of themes including demographic figures and profile, housing conditions, educational attainment and status, Income, health coverage, labour force, and employment.

The district-level reports serve as an important tool for decision makers- including national and local actors- donors, international organizations, NGOS, as well as the private sector, to understand the socio-economic contexts of these districts. They seek to enable informed and evidence-based planning, programming, and policy development, guide the implementation of district-level initiatives, and provide a tool for monitoring and evaluation progress.

“We believe that data and statistics are essential elements in the decision-making process, and lack of timely data – particularly at micro level – has been always a major concern while designing public policies. With the little resources available to CAS, the administration is trying to bridge existing data gaps and to meet the massive demand for national and sub-national statistics relying on its own human resources, and on the generous support provided by donors and international organizations” remarked Dr. Maral Tutelian Guidanian, Director General at the Central Administration of Statistics.

“The reports are a result of our long-standing partnership and ongoing cooperation with CAS.  Data is now more important than ever to support evidence-based policymaking particularly in times of compounded crises. This is an important milestone to go beyond the national average to develop people centered responses” added Celine Moyroud, UNDP Resident Representative.

Official statistics presented in the reports are drawn from the findings of the national Labour Force and Households Living Conditions Survey (LFHLCS) that was carried out by CAS between 2018 and 2019 with the funding from the Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon and the technical cooperation of the Regional Office for Arab States of the International Labour Organization (ILO). This survey is the first official Lebanese survey to produce statistics at the district level.
